Rome & Its Underground Mysteries

After disembarkation (assisted by Ground Operator) you will start your exclusive tour to Rome on the ROMA EXPRESS, a private, comfortable, fast and luxury train, the new and exclusive way for cruise guests to discover the eternal city. Enjoy a ride through the marvellous countryside, assisted by your escort and delighted by classical music.

An official guide will meet you at St. Peter’s Station (the Vatican area); your exclusive tour starts with a visit of St. Peter’s square. It was created by Bernini and it is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world. At the top of the square stands St. Peter’s Basilica, the Christendom’s most magnificent church, begun in 1452 on the site where St. Peter was buried. Throughout the following 200 years, such Renaissance masters as Bramante, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini worked on its design and created an unparalleled masterpiece. Of special note are Michelangelo’s Pieta and the bronze canopy over the high altar by Bernini. The immense dome was designed by Michelangelo.
After lunch, a private coach will transfer you to St. Clemente’s Basilica, built in 385, destroyed in 1084 by the Normans and rebuilt in 1108. St. Clemente was the 3rd pope in history (88-97 A.D.); the legend says that he was exiled and thrown into the Black Sea, bounded to an anchor (you will be able to see frescos inside the church). Start your guided visit of the church and admire the treasures in the underground Rome, visiting the fourth-century Basilica, with its frescoes, and the Clemente’s House-church of apostolic times, with the Mithraic Area, dedicated to the Persian god Mitra; continue your tour with a short walk to reach the Colosseum and guided visit of the largest amphitheatre ever built in Rome.

Your tour ends with a drive to St. Peter’s Station where Roma Express will take you back to Civitavecchia. A courtesy service may be offered on board under request.
